Knights and South dominate Gold Medal Night proceedings by mksc

Although the Melbourne Knights FC did not have the best of years on the pitch as a unit, the Football Federation Victoria Gold Medal Night indicated otherwise with the Knights in the thick of the action for the most coveted  individual awards.
First it was the Knights' memorable away win against Bentleigh which won Anita Milas, a freelance photographer, the Les Shorrock Best Football Image after she took an emotion charged photo of the Knights team moments after Tomislav Skara opened the scoring in the crucial relegation battle.
The men's top awards were shared by Victorian soccer powerhouses the Melbourne Knights and South Melbourne, sharing the U21 Player of the Year award, Bill Fleming Medal, Goalkeeper of the Year award and the much coveted VPL Gold Medal.
Knights import and former England U19 international Kevin Townson took out the Bill Fleming Victorian Media Player of the Year award, joining Essendon Croatia star Tommy Cumming as the second Knights player to have won the prestigious accolade.
Up and coming Knights winger Adrian Zahra was stunned to have won the Victorian Premier League U21 Player of the Year (similar to the old Sam Papasavas Medal from the NSL) to the delight of the Knights which as a club have always prides themselves on blooding young talent through the production line.

Tiatto hangs up the boots after a memorable career by mksc

Danny Tiatto announced his retirement from senior football recently after a long and illustrious 18 year career at both club and international level.
The 37-year-old decided to hang up the boots after the Melbourne Knight’s 4-2 victory over Northcote City in Round 21, opting to sit the last round out, knowing that the Knight’s had avoided relegation.
His final performance was one to remember, keeping the League’s leading scorer, Trent Rixon, extremely quiet, before being substituted for Tomislav Ples in the 76th minute.
Danny was pleased with his final performance for the Knights.
“I was happy, it’s always good to end something on a high, especially winning, and keeping the boys up”.
“To finish it off like that, at the club that gave me the first opportunity to move forward in my footballing career was great. It was great to give something back,” he said.
He started his career started way back in 1992, with the Bulleen Lions in the Victorian Premier League, where he made 36 appearances over two seasons. The midfielder then moved onto the NSL, playing in the 1994/95 and 1995/96 Melbourne Knights NSL championship teams.

Knights under 16's win A league by mksc

After overcoming some nervous moments and an opposition that played better than their position on the ladder suggested, the Melbourne Knights Under 16 team beat Keilor Park 1-0 yesterday to finish in first place in the Boys Under 16A West league.
Congratulations to all the boys, their coach Zlatko and team manager Sam on a great season.
This Saturday, September 4th, the team will play their first game of the Under 16 playoff series against Fawkner SC at Green Gully Reserve at 1.30pm
Billy Vojtek - an icon of Melbourne Croatia celebrates 50 years by mksc

Over 300 guests attended the Billy Vojtek testimonial dinner dance last Saturday evening at the Melbourne Croatia Social Club in honour of one of the club’s most lovable superstars.
The small yet explosive striker played for various incarnations of the club we now know as the Melbourne Knights, but once upon a time, way back in 1960, Billy Vojtek watched his first ever game when the Red, White and Blue of Croatia SC took on Sunshine City at Gardens Reserve in the Metropolitan Division 1 North. Croatia ran out 1-0 winners over Sunshine, but more importantly the love affair between Vojtek and his beloved Croatia was born. He confessed during the night that when he watched the game he said to himself, ‘I want to play for this team, that was my dream.’
Dreams weren’t to come true right away. The following season Vojtek’s father took his sons Jimmy and Billy to Corio Park to play. Croatia was based in Geelong and it wasn’t until 62’ when long time Croatia secretary Frank Burin brought Croatia to Tracey’s Speedway (Maribyrnong Park) in Western Melbourne to play.
The night began with current Knights president Ange Cimera welcoming all guests before the three course dinner was served.
It was then time for the formalities to begin. Knights secretary Melinda Cimera expertly read out Billy Vojtek’s testimonial written by Roy Hay which was also published in GoalWeekly.

Five Goal Gully get double chance by mksc

A five goal blitz from the Green Gully Cavaliers secured third place for season 2010.
It was the Melbourne Knights, relieved at having just survived one of the closest relegation battles in VPL history that let down their guard against a team itching for its first finals success in five years.
Gully midfielder Graham Hockless opened the scoring after about fifteen minutes of play.  Ironically, it was the Melbourne Knights who did most of the attacking early on, Knights forward Townson struck the Gully crossbar after just five minutes of play, and there were numerous other chances that the Gully defense just managed to scramble to safety.  Hockless’ goal was perfectly placed into the back top corner past young Knights goalkeeper Hrastov.
